Digital empowerment, educating people, student-centered promotion of digital education
Today, as the wave of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and educational technology sweeps the world, how can digital education maximize its effectiveness in the classroom instead of just being a mere formality? Tai Po Old Market Public School (Plover Cove) gave a very forward-looking answer with practical actions. Jiu Hui Po Wu School adheres to the three core beliefs of "student-centered, technology-driven, and contribution-oriented" and deeply integrates digital education into daily teaching of various subjects and cross-curricular learning, enhancing the depth and breadth of learning and demonstrating excellent teaching effectiveness.
Chinese Language: Dialogue with AI to deepen critical thinking
Jiuxi Baohu adheres to the principle that "AI can assist learning, but it can never replace students' thinking, questioning and judgment." In Chinese and English classes, the school positions the AI platform as a writing partner that guides conversations and sets situations, rather than as a "ghostwriting artifact" to help students do homework. The school applies AI in Chinese writing, allowing students to first create materials and complete preliminary writing, and then AI provides hierarchical scaffolding and instant feedback; students need to understand and judge before deciding to adopt, rewrite or reject AI suggestions, while teachers diagnose common learning difficulties based on student works and platform data. As for the topic of "passive voice" in the English subject, the teacher asked the students to use the sentence patterns they learned to describe the content of world festival postcards, and then used AI to generate images based on the text. Students must write accurately so that AI can generate pictures closer to the original intention; if the results are different from the original idea, the sentence structure and expressions need to be re-examined and revised. Through real-time comparison between words and images, the originally abstract grammar learning becomes concrete, and students can deepen their understanding through repeated use.
Mathematics makes thinking visible and accurately identifies learning difficulties
In mathematics classes, Jiuxi Baohu also does not allow "letting AI directly give answers." Teachers make good use of digital tools to first visualize students' thinking processes. AI or diagnostic systems then help teachers discover error patterns and provide personalized support. For example, in the sixth-grade study "Arc Explorer", students have to break down complex calculations into four steps: find the center of the circle, identify the radius or diameter, determine the arc length ratio, and finally choose the correct calculation formula. The system will randomly change the questions and automatically generate a "thinking diagnosis report" for each student. Teachers no longer mechanically "correct right and wrong", but can accurately identify students' learning difficulties.
General Knowledge, Humanities and Sciences: Reconstruct real situations and emphasize personal verification
Digital education makes humanistic history come alive and cultivates a rigorous spirit of scientific inquiry. Teachers make learning more meaningful through scenario reproduction and simulated experiments. For example, in topics that are far away from modern students, such as "Water People Culture" or "Old Street Markets," the school uses AI images and animations to recreate historical scenes and ancient artifacts. When discussing the topic "War and Peace", teachers used the digital simulation game "Tianxia Taiping" to experience how resources, defense, expansion, and armaments can escalate the situation, allowing students to personally experience the concept of conflict construction and try to find peaceful solutions.
In the "Fair Test of Beverage Sugar Content" in the Science Department, students first tried to change different conditions through AI simulation experiments many times to gain a detailed understanding of the principle of "changing only one variable and keeping other conditions consistent" in the fair test. The simulation allows students to repeatedly test and revise the design, and then enter the real experiment, using urine glucose test strips to compare different drinks. When the test paper results all showed dark colors, the students further asked: Is the sugar content of all drinks equally high, or is there a limitation in the measurement tool itself? Under the guidance of the teacher, they designed a dilution experiment for verification. From simulation design and actual operation to re-verification in the face of abnormal results, students learn not only experimental procedures, but also scientific inquiry methods for controlling variables, analyzing evidence, and correcting judgments.
Interdisciplinary AI enters real life and turns technology into meaningful actions
During the cross-curricular study week, teachers break the boundaries between traditional subjects, guide students to turn digital technology into a tool for solving problems, and create pieces of work that are visible and useful. For example, the first grade class has the theme of "Healthy and Happy Little Masters". The study combines visual arts and technology, turning clay works kneaded by students' hands into vivid AI animations to stimulate the interest of lower grade students in learning. In the theme of "Health Care Together" in the fourth grade, students used Chinese medicine-themed AI chatbots to assist in the development of health products and implemented the health care concepts they learned into product design; in the theme of "Art Journey" in the sixth grade: they combined light and shadow science and AI technology to make traditional shadow puppets and shoot introductory videos, integrating modern technology and traditional culture. These real-life learnings not only broadened students' horizons, but also turned technology into meaningful contributions.
Professional Navigation Practice, Research, Sharing
Tai Po Old Market Public School (Plover Cove)’s efforts in digital education have continued to receive recognition from the educational community and professional organizations in recent years. The school won the Silver Award of the e-zone x AiTLE "e-brand Awards—Hong Kong AI and Innovation Technology Education Excellence Award"; the teaching team also won the "Artificial Intelligence and Innovation Technology Education Excellence Teaching Award" of the Chinese University of Hong Kong for two consecutive years, and has been recognized by the Education Bureau's "Teaching Research Award Scheme 2024/2025", the Federation of Education's "21st Outstanding Teacher Selection 2026" Teaching Research Group and Innovative Teaching Group. These honors cover different aspects such as AI leadership, curriculum planning, teaching practice, teaching research, etc., demonstrating the school’s efforts over the years to continuously integrate artificial intelligence into daily teaching practices and continuously adjust course content through reflection and revision.
The school also actively shares these valuable experiences with peers in the education sector. In recent years, teachers have been invited to universities, education bureaus and major education professional platforms to give open classes and special lectures many times, and to discuss the application of artificial intelligence and digital education in real classrooms with their education colleagues. The school was also selected as the Education Bureau's Center of Excellence for Digital Education and hopes that through cross-school cooperation, it can provide effective teaching practice references for more schools to promote digital education.
Tai Po Old Market Public School (Plover Cove) Practice has proven that for digital education to be successful, it does not rely on the emergence of AI and advanced digital tool platforms as indicators of effectiveness. It emphasizes "timely and applicable" and maintains the original intention of "student-centered". AI can shorten the time for processing information, but it should not shorten the process of students' thinking, judgment and correction. In the future, the school will continue to focus on student learning and make good use of technology in appropriate positions, while maintaining the professional judgment of teachers, the subjectivity of students, and the educational direction of cultivating people with moral integrity and making real contributions.
